I purchased this book because I was fortunate enough to go on a photo shoot with Joe McNally at a PhotoShop World seminar Inspirational! Makes Me Want To Go Shooting NOW!. He gave many "common sense" techniques and tricks2009-03-19 Rating 5. I learned a lot that day and those tips have stuck with me. That's what makes Joe McNally such an awesome instructor and photographer. He's not afraid to give his secrets.

I read some of the negative reviews and all I can say to those reviewers: "photography is not like running a piece of machinery. It's technical, to be sure. But it's also a creative tool, and you must have a creative side to be a good photographer. There is no way you can learn how to shoot great photography by reading a book. You must be inspired to capture it the "Moment it Clicks. "

I have to add; it really helps to give a 5 star rating to a book when you find yourself in the book! That photo shoot I mentioned that I went on with Joe McNally, I'm there on the page (actually in both shots) titled "Da Premise. " Now how cool is that!!! Thanks Joe, I'm only at page 24, but I'm already loving each and every page. See you at a future PhotoShop World event.

I'm giving 4 stars to this book just because I loved and enjoyed reading it and because it is inspirational Good Book, Beautiful Photographs, Not a basic learning tool. This is not a basic learning tool and although Mr McNally throws a few nuggets about lighting the images in the book and shares a few anecdotes, it is not a deeply technical book that will unveil any secrets about photography2009-03-04 Rating 4. It is not a tell-all about lighting either. Nevertheless, the collection of images alone is worth the money so the book makes a nice addition to anyone's collection, although I would have preferred it was hard cover. .

I could not wait to get this book Not even worth a star. After reading the reviews online of how good it is, I was sure to be pleased with it2009-03-04 Rating 1.

I cannot believe what a let down this book was for me.

I first heard of this book through a well known lighting site. Then it was recommended by Scott Kelby. Obviously he recommends it. . he worked on this book. After reading Kelby's 2 book volume on photography (I highly recommend), I thought for sure to get more from this book, since it said it should be the next book I read.

Yeah some pictures were nice, some not. The pictures depicted in this book and the set up of "how to get this shot" where actually pretty comical. Just flipping through this book made me laugh and knew right then and there I made a wrong decision in buying this.

To an average person. . even to a pro photographer, their is very little use for this book. It takes you into Joe's Camera bag. . or garage. . or even into his helicopter to see the arsenal and never ending lighting rigs he uses. Again comical as it is, very unrealistic unless you plan on selling your house and your first born to have the gear he has.

Save your money, my book is going back tomorrow.

This was an interesting read More Situational than Technical. The stories around people and locations of pictures presented will help the newcomer to photography anticipate the job of photography2009-03-02 Rating 4. There were comments on lighting and staging, but it was not a 'how-to' book on those topics or camera settings.

I have to agree with so many of the reviews here Very Disappointing. 2009-02-27 Rating 1. . this is a very disappointing book. Some very interesting pictures. . but very little usable instruction. McNally seems to have endless equipment, budget, and contacts. How many average photographers can rent a helicopter to dangle a model above the Hollywood sign? Or have access to James Brown? Unless you are at that level, there is not much here for you but some semi-entertaining stories. This is definitely NOT a Scott Kelby type book. I'm disappointed in him too for recommending something so highly that has little or no practical application.

THE FIRST BOOK WITH ONE FOOT ON THE COFFEE TABLE, AND ONE FOOT IN THE
CLASSROOM
Joe McNally, one of the world’s top pro digital photographers, whose celebrated work has graced the pages of Sports Illustrated, Time, and National Geographic (to name a few), breaks new ground by doing something no photography book has ever done—blending the rich, stunning images and elegant layout of a coffee-table book with the invaluable training, no-nonsense insights, and photography secrets usually found only in those rare, best-of-breed educational books

When Joe’s not on assignment for the biggest-name magazines and Fortune 500 clients, he’s in the classroom teaching location lighting, environmental portraiture, and how to “get the shot” at workshops around the world. These on-location workshops are usually reserved for a handful of photographers each year, but now you can learn the same techniques that Joe shares in his seminars and lectures in a book that brings Joe’s sessions to life
