This is a pretty good book to start Beginners. I gave it only 4 stars because "drawing for dummies" had a lot more techniques and easier directions for about the same2009-03-30 Rating 4.

Nice, thorough lessons on the fundamentals of drawing Great Fundamental!. 2009-03-08 Rating 4. . clever and helpful diagrams that are unique for text such as this.

I'm in the process of teaching myself to draw/paint and striving for more creativity and find this book helpful in that it has instructions for drawing what you see howto. Even though it is helping me with drawing basics, its presentation is flat and sort of uninspiring, perhaps because there is no color in it and the pictures tend to be somewhat traditional and staid2009-02-14 Rating 3. I find myself wanting to say to the author, "Thanks; I'll try that; it should help me draw. . but could you break out, dance around a bit or something?" .

Good introduction to the fundamentals of drawing Good Introductory Text . With this and supplemental help from a few other texts the student should be able to get their drawing off to a good start2008-12-21 Rating 4. In addition to this you may want some subject specific drawing texts. Jack Hamm ,famous artist's figure drawing etc. . and most of all draw as much as you can!

•A best-seller for 35 years

• A timeless classic that has taught generations of artists—and will teach generations more

When it was originally published in 1970, How to Draw What You See zoomed to the top of the publisher’s best-seller list—and it has remained there ever since "I believe that you must be able to draw things as you see them—realistically," wrote Rudy de Reyna in this introduction. Today, generations of artists have learned to draw what they see, to truly capture the world around them, using de Reyna’s methods

Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic

Author:Alison Bechdel
Binding:Paperback

This is a good graphic memoir I probably would have loved if it were not in the graphic novel format good memoir in the wrong format for this reader. Alison Bechdel is a skilled storyteller and graphic artist2009-03-07 Rating 3. I don't know if she's a skilled writer because she relies on her drawings to evoke the Victorian monstrosity of her childhood home and the girly dresses she abhorred. The words she uses are effective in moving the story along emotionally and temporally but without the drawings, the story is half told. I almost feel as though this should be reviewed as a film instead of a book.

Bechdel does a good job depicting a family caught up in the social upheavals of the 60s and 70s. She is honest about herself and the conflicts between childhood memory and adult perspective and understanding. I like her honesty. The way literature and popular culture are woven into the story feels natural and essential.

One example of when I would have preferred a more traditional narrative was description of Greenwich Village at that point in history. I'm from New York and spent a lot of time in the Village during that period. I didn't need to know any more about the significance of Christopher Street or the post-Stonewall atmosphere of NYC. Maybe that is a weakness of the book: is the audience too narrow? I guess I'll know the answer to that question when my well-read but decidedly non-urban, mostly straight book group discusses this next week. (They like Persepolis, but I had the same misgivings with that book. ) I suspect I am just the wrong audience for graphic novels. If I run across any essays or other writings by Alison Bechdel, I will be happy to read them. And when they make the movie, I'll buy a ticket.

Ultimately, this read was pleasant but frustrating. If any graphic novel could have satisfied me, Fun Home would have - and didn't. It isn't Bechdel's fault. She's written a good graphic memoir that is, for me, lacking the emotional depth of a good memoir

Didn't think I would like the graphic novel genre, but I really did Suprisingly good. Well written and well illustrated2009-02-06 Rating 5. . plus, a quick read.

I didn't even know what a graphic novel was until recently, and only read this at the urging of a good friend and avid reader who is very selective in the books she recommends If all graphic novels are this good, I'm sold!. I had this idea that graphic novels would be comics for adults and in some way "dumb down" reading2009-02-05 Rating 5.

Not so with Fun Home. The combination of great writing and well-done illustrations just increases the story-telling effect. Bechdel is able to show important things in the drawings that might have been hard to describe in the writing. . especially at times when the writing is from a younger child's viewpoint. The illustrations show a lot of what is going on. . that a child wouldn't recognize.

Bechdel is laugh-out-loud funny at times, makes up interesting words that truly should be added to the dictionary, and tells a compelling story. I'm recommending this book to all my family and friends. If all graphic novels are this good, I'm sold on the genre. (but I expect it will be like any books. . takes great writing to make them work. )

and I agree that it's probably best NOT to know the story line ahead of time. . makes for much more interesting and sudden twists.

This is the first comic book I've read in, oh, 50 years Astounding!!. It's brilliant! 2009-02-05 Rating 5.

In this groundbreaking, bestselling graphic memoir, Alison Bechdel charts her fraught relationship with her late father In her hands, personal history becomes a work of amazing subtlety and power, written with controlled force and enlivened with humor, rich literary allusion, and heartbreaking detail.

This book has numerous color photos with an explanation of the approach used leading up to each. Living in Detroit in 2009 I find the book quite relevant since we are now on a journey to remake the city Always relevant. 2009-03-31 Rating 4.

I bought this book as a required reading for school Great read. It was very easy to read and covered many interesting topics2008-08-29 Rating 5. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in learning more about the urban environment.

In an age when architects and planners were spouting all kinds of brave-new-world nonsense (or mindlessly absorbing it, or even worse - building it), Jacobs burst onto the scene with an incredible dose of sanity mixed with common sense and wisdom, carefully observing the urban environment and drawing a host of remarkably sensible conclusions The triumph of common sense. The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers

EAN:9780321555618
Label:Adobe Press
Author:Martin Evening
Binding:Paperback

I bought both this book and Kelby's book, and I look forward to reading both, cover to cover Read this book before you read Kelby's. Yes, this will take time, but I want to really understand Lightroom 2, inside and out2009-03-23 Rating 5.

I first started reading Kelby's book. But he is colloquial and less verbose _at the expense of clarity_. Martin Evening's book is long, and incredibly detailed. But written _very_ clearly.

Long story short, read Martin Evening's book first. Nowhere is this point made more clearly than the two author's treatments of the "xmp"/sidecar issue. Martin Evening devotes 4 full pages to discussing this very confusing topic (pp. 179-182), whereas Kelby seems to cut corners and offer under-explained, possibly incorrect advice (see his three paragraph discussion on pp. 69-70).

Buy both books (Kelby's book seems to offer more tips and tricks related to the Development module, which I have yet to get to), but read Evening's book first. Kelby's book is too imprecise, cuts too many corners, to be your foundational course in Lightroom 2.

The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers

This book is a master's course in Photoshop Lightroom 2 A Master's Course In Photoshop Lightroom 2. For those of you who have read Martin Evening's other books on Lightroom and Photoshop, you already know that he leaves no stone unturned in breaking down the components and capabilities of any software he writes about2009-02-26 Rating 4. The good news is that if you want to know what any Lightroom 2 button, menu item, preference, tool, or setting does (and how to use it to its maximum capability), this book will tell you within its 601 pages. On the other hand, if you're looking for a quick introduction to get you up and running in Lightroom 2, this isn't it (although chapter one is an overview based on a shoot Martin did just for this book).

Martin follows Lightroom 2's workflow approach, taking the reader through each of the program's five modules (including 170 pages on just the Library module) from raw image import and organization to finished photo output and display (as a print, Web image or slide show). Along the way, he illustrates--in words, diagrams, charts, tables and his own exceptional images--the inner workings of Adobe's powerful--yet flexible--program.

This is clearly written and very complete Clear, Complete but poor screen capture illustrations. Those looking for a "quick start" Manuel should look elsewhere2009-02-23 Rating 4. This goes into great detail. The writing is reasonably concise and very easy to follow and understand. The screen captures of Lightroom, help you to understand exactly what he is referring to. The one great shortcoming of this book is the screen captures have low contrast and are very hard to read. Given that this could have been easily corrected using Lightroom or any other photo editing program, it is an outrageous short coming. I do hope they will correct it in the next edition, or even release a new version of this edition to correct it. Despite this one short coming, I would still recommend this to anyone who likes to delve into programs in great detail. .

Want more details? This is the full-blown reference guide for all your Lightroom 2 needs Depth and details. 2009-02-02 Rating 5.

All of Martin Evening's books are excellent: Lightroom 2 is no exception Lightroom 2 is essential if you want to learn the new software. Martin clearly explains in detail how to use the new Lightroom software while providing very useful tips as sidebars throughout the book2009-01-06 Rating 5. I have most all Lightroom and Photoshop books from many different authors. Some of these authors do not provide enough detail and/or make it difficult to understand. Martin's books have all relevant detail and are written in a style that is easily understood, logically organized and essential to understanding either Lightroom 2 or Photoshop CS4. Both the beginner and advanced photographer would benefit from having both his new books. .

While Adobe Photoshop has long been their choice for editing digital photographs, many photographers want a more focused tool That’s where Adobe Photoshop Lightroom comes in. Designed from the ground up with digital photographers in mind, Photoshop Lightroom offers powerful editing features in a streamlined interface that lets photographers import, sort, and organize images

The book has many practical and specific examples in using Capture NX2 Practical Examples for Best Use. Not exhaustive by any means, but most aspects of the program are explained in easy to understand language2009-03-07 Rating 4. I good addition to the user's guide for the software.

If you're new to Capture NX2, or planning to order it, have this book next to you A Whole Lot Better Than the Manual.

Like most software manuals, what Nikon provides with Capture NX2 is, at best, unfathomable2009-02-23 Rating 4. Sure, the manual contains a lot of information, but it's just that. . information. On the other hand, the book explains exactly how to get things done.

One example is regarding Metadata. The manual (at least to me) made no sense whatsoever. It only took me about ten minutes to find and read what I needed in the book and the proverbial lightbulb went on over my head.

No need to read it cover to cover, but I would suggest reading about one task at a time. Not only the tasks that you find confusing but the ones you think you have down. You might just find a faster and easier way to get things done.

I don't know about you, but I'd much rather be out shooting than sitting at a computer. This book has saved me an awful lot of computer time and just might be the best $27 Nikon NEF shooters using Capture NX2 can spend.

I am finding this book helpful A missed opportunity. It is straightforward and covers most of Capture NX22009-01-24 Rating 4. However it would have been greatly enhanced if the author or publisher had provided a means of downloading the photos used as examples in the book. It would then be possible to work along with the instructions in the book and thus reinforce the learning process. As it is the book comes out as fairly dry and abstract. I have recently downloaded videos to accompany the eBook by Jason Odell and they have been a great help in assimilating the knowledge provided in his excellent book "The Photographer's Guide to Capture NX2". As well he does provide downloadable photos that are used in his book.

The title of the book says it all, "real world Real world says it all.... " I learned NX2 to a certain level using the CD by Jason O'Dell2009-01-22 Rating 5. This book takes you to new levels of understanding and proficiency.

This is a detailed book, that will get you started a lot faster then reading through the help files Better then the manual. The help files don't give a lot of how, and whys2009-01-14 Rating 5. but the real world nikon capture book does a great job at explaining the more powerfull features of the software.

Capture NX 2 from Nikon is a powerful image-editing application that lets photographers work with digital photographs with more speed and efficiency than other software programs Its underlying technology gives photographers the ability to make selective corrections to an image with just one click. Awe-inspiring to say the least.

They are as warm and eye catching, and the conversation is as exhilarating as the visual magic and spaces John has been creating for the decades we are blessed to have his gift. To say that John Saladino is an interior designer is a bit of an understatement. John is an artist who uses spaces, nature and objects to create a landscape matched only by the great painters and sculptors who have gone before him. I do believe it is time for the Nobel committee to establish a new category -- one just for John Saladino. Of course, he will get the Nobel. There is NO competition (smile).

Swamp Thing Vol. 1: Saga of the Swamp Thing

EAN:9780930289225
Label:Vertigo
Author:Alan Moore
Binding:Paperback

Ok, I bought this GN based on all the great reviews Don't Understand All the Hype...... The art work is not that great and the story telling is ok2009-02-26 Rating 2. It was bland and somewhat boring. I hate to knock anyone's work, so please realize this is just one reader's opinion. I do read a lot of graphic novels, especially those considered to be written for adults and this one just did not impress me at all. My biggest regret is that I bought the entire Swamp Thing run by Alan Moore and none of them have been that great. I had high hopes based on the reviews but have been very disappointed. .

So many people talk about the writing so I think is useless for me to do it (awesome) Splendid artwork Bissette & Totleben. I have picked up a couple of books of the early 90's, none of them come as nearly as close as this one is well portrait, (I bought Knightfall, Zero Hour, and the return of Superman) one thing is to draw good in little panels, another is having a perspective to tell a story like Bissette and Totleben2008-10-16 Rating 5. Not many reviewers mention them. Just pick up the sandman and you can tell the difference after Sam Kieth left, the story is great but the artwork is mediocre for a book like that, that's why I'm still buying the next books of S. T. The work of this 2 great artists is beyond splendid, forget about technology, there a few pencillers like Bissette today and no Inker like Totleben. If you don't know what an inker does, take a look at Green Lantern, Van Sciver does his own inking (for the most part), Ivan Reis is one hell of a good penciller but he lack a hell of a good inker. Pick S. T. 1 &2, just the art work is a masterpiece well deserved to be taken a look at, now needless to say the depth of the stories. .

With Swamp Thing, Alan Moore, one of the most talented authors in comic book history, rewrote the rules Amazing Horror. I picked this up 20 years ago and am still amazed2008-06-30 Rating 5. Steve Bissette and John Totleben are probably my favorite art team in the history of comics. This is close to their start, so it's a little rough around the edges, but still way above and beyond the vast majority of most illustrators out there. Steve drew the amazing layouts, destroying storyboard conventions, and John tightened the loose sketches up into works of art. This was hugely influential when it came out, and still a highlight of work in graphic storytelling to this day. Many people copied, but few could rival, Alan Moore's dark and serious style.

This may not be well received by the standard comic book crowd, but Alan Moore never wrote for that market share. Unfortunately, except for the cover none of John Totleben's amazing painted covers are included. DC really should put out a book of those. Moore and Totleben cooperated once again on Miracleman, another book with a dark edge that deconstructs superhero myths and is worth checking out.

Alan Moore took this as an opportunity to try something completely different with the Swamp Thing character, and pretty much succeeded Graphic SF Reader. While I am not as much a fan of this as some people, it is still pretty good2007-09-03 Rating 4.

The Swamp Thing series also introduces to someone perhaps a bit more interesting. John Constantine, Hellblazer.

Many would say that the comic industry was redefined by works such as Watchmen and The Dark Knight returns, but for me (and there are countless people who would agree with me on this one) it all started with the first issue of Swamp Thing included in this collection Where the comics revolution REALLY began. "The Anatomy Lesson" heralded a new narrative structure and a literary voice that still rings in the ears of most comic book fantatics to this day: Alan Moore2007-06-18 Rating 5. After clearing up some unfinished storylines before starting his revamp of the character Moore started to cut loose, and Saga of the Swamp Thing moved from an obscure horror comic book into legend. Not only is "The Anatomy Lesson" brilliant, but there are other stories in here that would rank as some of my favorites of all time. Though some people might claim that Moore was still trying out panel transitions and experimental narrative structures that did not always work, I disagree. They worked perfectly, and make reading the comic so much more enjoyable. If the narrative seems long-winded to some, well then, they can just go ahead and feast their eyes on the gorgeous art (courtesy of John Totleben and Steve Bissette). I also have to mention the very last issue in this collection as a counterpoint to the first, entitled "By Demons Driven. " This story gives us a taste of things to come in future collections, and just when events just can't seem to get any darker the last panel of this issue proves us wrong. Even if you're not a comic fan, you should get this. See where it all really began. Buy it. Read it. Let the words penetrate the root systems of your mind. Smell the moss. Taste the fear. . hold it in your hands. Saga of the Swamp Thing.

The only thing I would add though is that it took me three times as long to implement all the ideas2009-02-28 Rating 5. Chicken Coops: 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock

I too was a little disappointed in this book Not a book of Plans. It doesn't actually have plans for the coops2009-03-15 Rating 1. It profiles several different types of coops and there are pics and rough sketches. But missing is a list of materials and enough detail to justify calling them plans. .

Other reviewers are correct, the book has no detailed plans, or materials lists Title not correct, but a good book nevertheless.. Nonetheless, I found the book to be full of valuable information2009-03-06 Rating 4. Chances are one would have to change and adapt a chosen plan to perfectly fit his or her needs anyway. I own Gail Damerow's book on raising chickens and it gives lots of guidelines on space requirements (I highly recommend this book). After perusing this book for inspiration, and using Gail's book for facts and figures, I got out pencil and paper (and an eraser) and designed my own coop to fit my future flock's size (32) and my chosen management style (mobile coop/free-range).

The valuable information I mentioned is in the stories of the individuals from all over who give their management styles, tips and thoughts in the text. I love the idea of over-wintering my future hens in a poly-tunnel greenhouse. With this method, the owner's of this flock (from New York state, I believe) had such rich soil the next spring, that they had tomatoes by June! That's an attractive idea to those of us living in the north. This is just one of the many ideas that intrigued me.

My local library system has three copies of this book, I had to turn mine in without being able to renew it as I would have liked, because someone had placed a hold on it, all three copies are currently checked out. My advice on buying any book would be to check it out from the library first if possible, then decide if you want to own it. I'm about to spend the $13. 57 because I feel the information within is worth it.

I should have read the reviews Not worth the money. 2008-12-26 Rating 2. not the item description. These are "ideas" that I could have come up with on my own and saved $20. You can get better ideas on the internet.

This book is a truly disappointing source for good poultry housing plans Truly disappointing!. Though some of the housing may be interesting from an artistic standpoint, many of the designs are not practical when it comes to sanitation, vermin control, and sensible layout2008-12-01 Rating 2. It would appear as if the author capitalized on the entertainment aspect of the designs rather than on the usefulness of them. The details for the inside of the structures were lacking making it seem as if the book is basically a collection of photographs.

The product was exactly what I asked for and it was a great price very good. I will definatly shop with amazon again2008-10-15 Rating 4.

Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines (Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines)

I'm a graduating senior in Illustration and I bought this book to use as a guideline for prices but when I brought it in to school all of my teachers, who are working illustrators them selves told me I wasted my money Good starting place, but out of date. . They told me that this book is only useful as a first indication to someone like me who has literally no idea of what market value for different illustrations are but that the information in this book is obtained by surveys sent out to illustrators and designers2009-03-27 Rating 1. In some cases they got 4 back, 3 of which were from retired people, meaning that for that section the information is just 1 persons opinion, though it's presented as the final word on the situation. As a result of the book being compiled this way the prices almost never change or go up and this book is a large contributing factor to the fact that prices for illustration and design are still in the same place they were 20 years ago. This book is only good for someone who has no idea at all what to charge, but it does more harm then good and at the advice of every working illustrator and designer I've talked to it's a waste of money. .

I can tell you from first hand experience that there is absolutely NO SHORTAGE of employers who are ready to swindle out-of-work designers Buy this book before the paranhas eat you alive!. I've ran into an employer that had me doing senior level work as an un-paid intern (I am happy to say that I wrangled money out of her in the end)2009-01-12 Rating 5. And on another occasion there was an employer that as part of the interview had me work for 3 hours on her project under the pretense of testing my skills!

These people are parasites and although I've learned the hard way, there will always be other fresh meat to take advantage of. Which is why if you are a legitimate designer or artist for hire, I highly recommend purchasing this book from the Graphic Artists Guild. I wish I had bought the book before I even graduated as the information is invaluable. Not only is it helpful for you but it is also helps raise the standard of the field as a whole.

If you are in the graphics industry this is the book for you Cant go wrong. 2008-12-20 Rating 5. everything from prices to practices. . love this book.

I was so pleased with this purchase I was so pleased with this purchase. I received the book quickly, and it was like new2008-10-14 Rating 5. The Book itself is like a Bible for freelance artists. .

Priceless and necessary material for all graphic artists, especially those like me that are just beginning to get some sort of grasp on how much things should cost A Necessary Resource. 2008-08-31 Rating 5.

Go Buy it and Read It, and Re Read it and Re Read it till you understand design completely The BEST book on Design out There . 2009-03-16 Rating 5.

This is a fun book to flip through An enjoyable read. It does contain information that isn't readily available online, so it's useful as a reference as well, though I'm not sure how often you'll feel the need to invoke things like the "Most Average Facial Appearance Effect" for your work (unless your work is in research psychology)2009-03-11 Rating 4. I would recommend this as an entertaining and modestly informative design book, but it's not essential.

This is a good overall book Worked great for college class. It was required for my college class2009-02-14 Rating 3. I have enjoyed learning about all different ways to present written information.

This book is never far from my reach Designer must have - This book is never far from my reach. I get asked lots of basic design questions to which I'd like to provide accurate answers2008-12-31 Rating 5. When I'm at a loss for how to explain a design principle, I just reach for this handy guide. I have a Bachelors degree in fine art, so flipping through this book is like a college refresher course. If you're new to design or want to learn the basics, this book is an excellent place to start. It's also worth keeping handy as a reference.

The great thing about this book is that each principle is explained as its own short, illustrated chapter. Each chapter is a two-page spread so you can quickly learn new principles. The illustrations are simple and assist in making each principle clear and easy to understand. There are 100 principles (or chapters), so there is very little that's not covered in the book.

No matter what field you're in, if you are a designer this book is for you Must have book for any designer.. The book's title says it all, this is information that is helpful no matter what kind of design you're doing2008-11-19 Rating 5. It explains how people absorb information and ways a design can be improved to aid in this.

The book is well layed out and easy to get into just one topic without having to read everything. Great for reference and education. A beautiful hardcover book. Whether you design products, webpages, software systems or entire buildings this one is for you.

Whether a marketing campaign or a museum exhibit, a video game or a complex control system, the design we see is the culmination of many concepts and practices brought together from a variety of disciplines Because no one can be an expert on everything, designers have always had to scramble to find the information and know-how required to make a design work until now.

This workbook is great Creative revival. You will not regret buying it2009-01-17 Rating 5. Julia Cameron has put together a great addition to her book "The Artist's Way" Which I would highly recommend as well. .

Haven't had the chance to use it yet but it arrived promptly and in perfect condition Great workbook. Looking forward to using it on my creative journey2008-09-21 Rating 5.

Writing a review for this book poses a bit of a dilemma A Wonderful Method. How do I write a review of this book that gives it the praise that it deserves without having it sound like typical internet marketing hype? Oh well, I guess it's a risk that I'll have to take2008-09-19 Rating 5.

In this book, Julia gives the reader a complete system that includes daily and weekly readings and tasks that are designed to awaken, or re-awaken, the creative artistic voice that may have been hidden or ignored for years or decades because of the necessity to meet the challenges and difficulties of daily life. Well, guess what? Her system works! It not only works, it works extremely well! And, not only does it work extremely well, it's an inspiring, fun, and thoroughly rewarding process that can feel like a daily meeting with a favorite mentor or trusted friend who is a source of continual inspiration. Well, this is what it has come to feel like for me anyway.

Based on my own experience, I would say that any frustrated artist, musician, or other creative type who engages the process of this book completely will not only NOT be disappointed, they'll awaken to something vital that may have been lost for a long time.

There, that wasn't so bad after all.

This workbook is exactly the same as the book, adding space for writing Artist's Way workbook. There is nothing new in it at all2008-07-11 Rating 2. Save your money and buy a journal.

You do not need any other book as a companion to this workbook Stands alone as a great help. Time consuming but worth it.. It stands alone as a great resource2008-03-21 Rating 4. I have read a bunch of self help books on finding your true life's path. After about the third or fourth book they all seem to say the same thing. Get in touch with your good and bad emotions and use those emotions to help steer a course. What I liked about this workbook is it minimizes the theory and talk and gets right to the point of you doing practical exercises to discover what you really want in life. I only completed about 2/3rd of the workbook. I have spoken to other people who have used this workbook with great results. I have purchased a 2nd copy to walk through the exercises again. If you feel lost and at a dead end in your life's pursuit I think this workbook would be a great place to start.

Thinking with Type: A Critical Guide for Designers, Writers, Editors, & Students (Design Briefs)

EAN:9781568984483
Label:Princeton Architectural Press
Author:Ellen Lupton
Binding:Paperback

Design isn't just about how things look, the answer to a design challenge is more about discovering why certain things work Not definitive, but a worthy handbook of the larger typographic discussion. In steering projects toward visual solutions that deliver clear messages, we have to look at the very building blocks of design2009-03-02 Rating 4. Thinking with Type: A Critical Guide for Designers, Writers, Editors, & Students aims to get at the heart of this issue. If the cover seems familiar it might be because I mentioned this book before in my article Gifts for Graphic Designers: A Wish List, but it's time for a more thorough review. The book's aim is to be as practical as possible while providing a logical and historical foundation. It's a field guide for professionals to deal with type. This book comes from Ellen Lupton, a professor at my home state's Maryland Institute College of Art.

Choosing type isn't just about whim or feeling. This book deconstructs type into basic elements helping you make informed design decisions. The book is divided into three sections: Letter, Text and Grid plus an appendix of definitions, hints and warnings. History is weaved between practical information in a way that is more narrative and entertaining than the typically dry text book lesson. In one moment you're reading about the purpose of body text; the author switches abruptly into the history of written manuscripts. In a short few paragraphs we're in the digital age of dynamic text. In talking about spacing, the history of written type translated onto evenly made printing blocks is transformed into the modern purpose of controlling visual space in body copy. The sections might be considered essays more than a longer narrative, which makes for an easy read.

The examples are as integral to the book's narrative as the history itself. The design of the pages often split the text liberally with examples. The layout of the book has great play with type itself. When is justified text good or bad? The answers are stated with justified text. Makes sense. Many of the other examples are just fun type tricks and explainations on when and why they work or don't.

Effectively conveyed is type styles' effectiveness in different mediums. Helvetica is a font designed for print, Verdana works well for web. The writer doesn't just force you to memorize this kind of information, but instead she explains why. So you can look at type with fresh eyes and see that Verdana's large x-height and simple curves work well for the pixel display of the computer system. The layout grid is discussed like most things, with it's origin with printing press. The focus is clearly intended to steer the reader into the uses of the modern grid in magazine, book and web design.

There are some negatives. Purposefully functional, the history isn't fully explored. It's the backdrop for basing modern uses of type. The essay format drives the points forward and then simply moves on. This is possibly ideal for the busy modern pros that the book must be aimed to, but for those looking for a long form and in-depth view you'll have to go elsewhere. The modern model of dynamic typography that changes with context is in full effect and some readers might not like some of the more magazine styled layouts.

I suspect that the average reader will learn a lot from this text. It can serve as a good guide during the design process. The short page count of the book can be seen as a much appreciated conciseness. The format is almost web-like in it's sections and pieces which appeals to a young and tech-savvy designer such as myself. Will the average writer or editor appreciate this information as much? Perhaps not. It may not be what everyone is looking for, but it will appeal to many design professionals who need a quick reference and crash course.

This book is full of stuff Great book!. Once you start you really don't want to put it down2009-02-15 Rating 5. It is fun to read. One of the easiest I have ever read, almost like a childrens book, but better. It is filled with historical and present typographic trends and styles and common rules and systems that are used throughout the history of type, and much much more. .

This is a great book that introduces typography in a simple, easy to understand way Great book for introducing typeography.

Beginning with the history of typography, and going through pre-digital type, then going on into contemporary typography, this book offers a good resource for graphic designers and English majors alike2009-02-14 Rating 4.

For the beginning graphic designer reading this review, I would definitely suggest this book before tackling some of the more in-depth typography books so that one can have a basis for understanding some of the more complicated concepts that will be presented in alot of the other books.

This is one of only a few type books that I have read and was one of the most enjoyable Solid concepts. The concepts of typography are presented in an easy to follow flow and language that anyone can understand while not 'dumbing down' typography to a point that designers won't enjoy the book2008-09-29 Rating 4.

A fun book to read to learn about how types we're created (author and history) Fun and interesting.

Really like it2008-07-17 Rating 4.

I guess only people in the graphic design world will like this book.

The organization of letters on a blank sheet -- or screen -- is the most basic challenge facing anyone who practices design What type of font to use? How big?
